Lanes reopen after water main break on University Avenue

By Erin Anderson

Roadways are open after a water main break on University Avenue in Waterloo.

The break near Bridge Street was first identified on Sunday night, and according to the city’s water utilities team, it’s a significant repair with several small leaks.

Crews started working on the problem Monday, which resulted in lane closures and led to traffic delays in the area. The City of Waterloo said approximately five metres of new pipe was needed to replace the damaged infrastructure.

Paving work continued through early Tuesday afternoon but lane restrictions were lifted as of 2:30 p.m.

“The city understands that traffic restrictions are frustrating for our residents and we appreciate the patience for the restoration works.”

The municipality said there were no water service disruptions in the area and noted these types of water main breaks are the most common and may be related to an increase in water use for spring clean-up.

Since January 1, there have been 22 water main breaks in Waterloo.
