Flood watch, warning lifted as last day of winter feels more like summer across Waterloo Region

Wednesday marks the last day of winter, marking the end of the cold commutes, snow-covered roads, and blistering winds.

It’s sure to be a warm send-off though, with bright, sunny skies in the forecast and a high near 18 C throughout the day.

Jill Taylor, 570 Meteorologist, said it will almost feel like the region has jumped from winter, through spring, and straight to summer. She said it’s right on the edge of setting some seasonal records.

“The record for a March 19 is 19.4 C set in 1938. So, if we exceed 19.4 C, we’ve set a new record for March 19, we’ll watch out for that.”

Even though it’ll be a beautiful day to welcome in spring, it’s not without its bad news as Taylor said it’s still expected to be a chaotic start to the new season, with some winter weather still in the forecast.

“Don’t get too excited about all these mild temperatures, very warm temperatures as we head into spring,” she said. “We welcome spring on Thursday, but by Sunday night, Monday morning, we could, could possibly see five plus centimetres of snow.”

Temperatures are expected to slowly dip throughout the week leading up to the weekend, with a high of 10 C on Thursday, 7 C on Friday, and 3 C on Saturday.

For Wednesday, enjoy the warm and beautiful weather, but make sure not to pack away those mittens and scarves quite yet.

Along with the warmer weather the Grand River Conservation Authority announced Wednesday it has lifted it’s flood watch and flood warning for the Grand River watershed.

According to the authority since Mar 14. high water levels have receded, but a watershed conditions statement for water safety remains in effect until 4 p.m. Friday Mar 21.
