St. Patrick’s Day party rages on, despite court injunction

Hundreds of revellers sporting shamrock green were out in the University District of Waterloo celebrating the ‘luck of the Irish’ this weekend.

Saturday afternoon saw Waterloo regional police officers responding to gatherings in the Marshall Street and Regina Street North area.

That is just around the corner from nearby Ezra Avenue, where the annual St. Patrick’s Day unsanctioned street gatherings traditionally took place. Since 2022, the street parties have shifted to Marshall and Regina.

This year, the City of Waterloo obtained a court injunction that allows the arrest or detention of anyone attending, hosting, creating, or sponsoring an unsanctioned street party or violating the city’s nuisance bylaw in the university district.

The injunction order is in effect from 12 a.m. on Friday until 11:59 p.m. on Monday.
