Snow and cold to start March with mild weather returning next week

Saturday, March 1 marks the meteorological start to spring, but winter isn’t going anywhere this weekend.

Strong wind gusts and snow are taking over Waterloo Region and surrounding areas Friday night into Saturday morning.

Denise Andreacchi, 570 NewsRadio Weather Specialist, said five or more centimetres of snow is possible, with wind gusts around 40-60 km/hr.

“We have recorded close to 70 cm of snow at the Region of Waterloo airport so far for the month of February. That is a lot more snow that we had last February where we only accumulated close to 2 cm, it was really mild last year.”

After the snow, comes the cold.

Wind chill values on Saturday and Sunday could feel as cold as -22 C.

No weather alerts for Waterloo Region from Environment Canada had been issued as of Friday morning.

The warmer weather that was teased this past week, will make a return after the chilly weekend.

Looking at the long range forecast, temperatures could get as high as 7 C on Wednesday.
