‘Very large’ snow system set to bury Waterloo Region; travel advisory issued

Keep the shovel handy and the snow blower fueled: Another monster snow system is headed towards Waterloo Region this weekend.

Environment Canada issued a winter weather travel advisory for the region for Saturday as the national weather agency says 5 to 10 cm of snow is possible and could be mixed with freezing drizzle during the afternoon hours.

The wintry weather is expected to impact roadways and drivers are being warned to consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve.

According to 570’s Meteorologist Jill Taylor, as much as 40 centimetres of snow could fall between Saturday and Sunday, adding onto the 20 cm that fell between Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

“This’ll be one very large system that will come in two waves,” said Taylor.

“The weekend storm gets going Saturday, it’ll start with some snow in the morning, potential for 10 to 12 cm. We may get a bit of a lull Saturday night, so whatever falls during the day Saturday, try to shovel it. Because Sunday, we get another wave of snow with another 10 to 20 cm.”

For Valentine’s Day, Taylor is forecasting cloudy skies, a high of -7 C, and the potential for some light flurries.
