Jeep stolen from Guelph driveway; police lay charges in trespassing case

A Guelph man is facing several charges from police after officers were called about a “suspicious” person walking around the east end of the city.

According to a press release, just before 5:00 a.m. officers were called to the area of Cedarvale Avenue and Oakes Crescent for a man walking around checking vehicles. Police said he was trying to gain entry to the vehicles.

Cruisers drove around the area before finding a man hiding beside a house on Valleyhaven Lane. When spotted the man started to run through backyards and was arrested after police chased him.

He was carrying a folding knife, a homemade lock-punching tool and stolen property, the release reads.

Officers said the man provided a fake name and after further investigation, police found he was out on bail with conditions to remain in his residence, not to have weapons and not to have any break-and-enter tools.

As a result the 47-year-old was charged with:

• Trespassing by night
• Carrying a concealed weapon
• Possessing stolen property
• Possessing break and enter tools
• Obstructing police
• Breaching bail (x3)
• Failing to appear in court

He was held for a bail hearing later on Feb. 7.

Separate vehicle theft

This incident comes just after a Jeep SUV was stolen from a Guelph east-end driveway the day before.

Officers were called Thursday afternoon to a home near Starwood Drive and Summit Ridge Drive.

“A man said he went to check on his parents’ house as they are on vacation and noticed their white 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT missing from the driveway,” the press release reads.

Police noted that both keys were still inside the house.

The incident remains under investigation, officials said.
