Safe Super Bowl celebration top of mind for OPP

Super Bowl Sunday is one of those days provincial police mark in bright colours on their calendars.

Just like most holidays in this province, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said they will have a noticeable presence on main and back roads on Sunday, watching for anyone who may have overindulged and made the wrong choice.

While speaking to 570 NewsRadio, OPP sergeant Ed Sanchuck had a warning for drivers on Sunday.

“There will be an increased police presence on our highways and back roadways and don’t be surprised if you are stopped at one of our R.I.D.E. spot checks in order to determine sobriety.”

“So again, have that designated driver because once you go out to a party and you have that designated driver, you have nothing to worry about on the way home.”

He went on to say, “Many businesses and private residences will be hosting Super Bowl parties. If you plan on drinking or taking other intoxicating substances, please plan ahead. Do not get behind that wheel because there is no safe level of alcohol or drug consumption when getting behind the wheel of a vehicle.”

Sanchuck had a few tips for hosts to ensure their guests have a good time, but are also safe.

“You want to pour properly measured drinks. Don’t free pour or pour doubles. Serve drinks rather than having a self-serve bar, so that you can actually gauge how many drinks people are having,” he said. “Don’t serve alcohol or cannabis to an already intoxicated person. Keep the phone numbers of local cab companies on hand and take the keys away from anyone who trying to drive while intoxicated by alcohol or drugs.”
