Black History Month GRT bus wrap to roll through Waterloo Region

A local student at Wilfrid Laurier University, studying health equity for the Black community, is behind a new Black History Month bus wrap rolling around Waterloo Region this February.

Grand River Transit (GRT) says the artwork from Vanessa Nkansah-Okoree “conveys a message of strength in diversity.”

“Diversity within the Black community is often overlooked, and my goal is to highlight the richness of that diversity, showcasing how we are united in our experiences but unique in our identities,” says Nkansah-Okoree.

“I want to challenge the narrow, stereotypical portrayals of Black people and instead celebrate the depth of our identities. By embracing our differences and recognizing the importance of diverse representation, we can create a more inclusive, empowered community.”

Nkansah-Okoree lives in Waterloo, with her parents originally from Ghana.

The bus wrap came to life through a partnership between the Canadian Caribbean Association of Waterloo Region (CCAWR), and the Region of Waterloo.

It will be driving on local roadways for the month of February.
