City of Waterloo encourages safe use of fireworks during celebrations
With the Lunar New Year coming up on Jan. 29, the City of Waterloo reminds residents of when and how they can celebrate with fireworks.
Alongside the Lunar New Year, Waterloo residents can use fireworks from dusk until 11 p.m. on Victoria Day, Canada Day, and Diwali/Deepavali.
They must be used on private property, not any public spaces like schools or parks, and are to be used only by adults aged 18 or older.

Alongside the safe use of fireworks, the city is reminding residents to be mindful of the impacts they can have on neighbors and wildlife.
They recommend informing neighbours in advance if you plan to use fireworks, since pets, kids, and people on varied work schedules can be sensitive to loud sounds.
It is also advised to avoid using fireworks in areas near water systems or where wildlife lives since the chemicals in fireworks can be harmful to animals and the environment.
If you’re looking to report firework usage outside the permitted times or for noise complaints you can call 519-747-8785, and if there’s an emergency or dangerous situation call 911.
You can learn more about fireworks safety at the City of Waterloo’s website.
