Public school board considers providing transparency through pair of motions

More than a month on and the public is still no closer to finding out what led to the sudden departure of former Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) Director of Education jeewan chanicka.

Steps taken by some board members look to bring clarity to the situation, or at the very least, give the public a chance to ask the questions.

A pair of similar-but-different motions are coming to a WRDSB board meeting at the end of the month will look to provide transparency in different ways.

One motion was brought forward by trustee Carla Johnson, urging a consultation process between staff and the broader community to receive input on needs of students in the spring of this year.

The other motion was brought forward by trustee Cindy Watson, pushing to schedule a town hall meeting by the end of March, giving parents a chance to address the board with their concerns.

In a letter signed by trustees Watson, Bill Cody, and Mike Ramsey posted on Ramsey’s X account, the trio explain their intent to hold a town hall in response to the directors departure to revisit fundamental goals and educational strategies.

Both those motions will be considered at a board meeting on Jan. 27.
