‘Reptiles need forever homes too’: Turtle, two snakes up for adoption

It isn’t just cats and dogs who are up for adoption, it’s reptiles too.

Adam Stephens, Director of Marketing and Community Outreach with the Humane Society of Kitchener-Waterloo and Stratford Perth, said it can be a bit trickier to find suitable forever homes for furless pets.

“When we’re dealing with unusual animals outside of cats and dogs, we usually look for individuals who are looking to adopt them who have had prior experience and know what they’re getting into because it’s a bigger commitment,” Stephens said.

He said reptiles are cold-blooded and have specific climate and environmental requirements, which can be a barrier for some people.

The agency is currently looking to rehome three reptiles in their care, including a young turtle named Yertle.

“Yertle is a female red painted slider turtle who is looking for their forever home too,” said Stephens.

She was found on the side of a rural road just outside of New Hamburg and had some damage to her shell. She’s been with the Humane Society since September and is ready to meet her new family.

“If you are interested in adopting Yertle, please make sure that you are willing to commit to at least 20 years,” noted Stephens.

There are also two snakes currently up for adoption: One is a five-year-old female named Onyx, who is a bit temperamental. Her online posting says, “She will need someone who is used to snakes that do not tolerate handling well.”

The other reptile is a three-month-old Mexican Black Kingsnake named Sable, who is described as being a good pet for first time snake owners.
