Wonders of Winter returns to Waterloo Park
It’s about to get a lot more merry and bright in Waterloo Park as the Wonders of Winter Festival returns Nov. 30.
The holiday tradition has a 31-year history and sees 100,000 lights installed through the park. It’s put on by a dedicated group of volunteers, with help from sponsors in the community.
One of those volunteers is David Hollinger, who says it takes a lot of work to get all the lights and displays ready for visitors.

“We have a remarkable team of people,” Hollinger said while on The Mike Farwell Show on 570 NewsRadio.
He explained Wonders of Winter started in 1993 by Bill Weiler, who approached service clubs and the City of Waterloo about putting up holiday lights in Waterloo Park.
Since then, the festival has grown and attracted thousands of visitors every season.
“We want to put on a good show,” said Hollinger.

He said it’s a balance of bringing in new displays and technology while keeping the fan favourites and “homegrown flavour” of the festival.
The opening ceremony for Wonders of Winter is happening at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 30 in front of the Log Cabin in Waterloo Park.
The festival runs until Jan. 4 and is free to attend. Hot chocolate will be served on Friday and Saturday nights.
