Local fallen veterans are honoured in window display in Hespeler Village

Remembrance Day is just around the corner, a window display has popped up again in Hespeler Village but this year it aims to honour fallen veterans who lived there. A list of 90 names can be seen on the window display those correlates to the ones listed on the cenotaph on Queen Street.

Poppies, hats and other items used by soldiers can be viewed at Kindness in the Village at 11 Queen St. E, all of which are on loan from the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 272 in Hespeler Village.

“Those veterans have passed away during World War I, World War II, and the Korean War and we have one that passed away during United Nations peacekeeping duties. They’re all from Hespeler, they all had families and lived here in the Town of Hespeler,” said Bill Kalbhenn, vice president and veteran service officer for the branch.

“When I was a child growing up here in Hespeler, pretty much all the stores in town had decorations in their windows, so its just a little bit of nostalgia as well.”

The CEO of the community store, Denise Baker, told 570 NewsRadio she wanted to do it to support local veterans, as she often volunteers with the Legion. This year she enlisted the help of three volunteers to create the window display.

“I may be a store, I may be selling clothing, but I’m about community and that means people can drop in and just hang out here, cry here, hug here – it’s just about bringing people together,” said Baker.

A Remembrance Day ceremony is being held at the cenotaph on Queen Street in Hespeler Village on Monday, starting at 10 a.m., which will pay tribute to local veterans. The community is invited to attend.
