Just as Guelph police said they were going to ramp up resources to the downtown core to help offset open drug use and criminal behaviours, an undercover operation has resulted in the arrests of two Guelph men.
Guelph Police Service Drug Enforcement Unit started an investigation this month into trafficking problems in the core of the city after receiving several complaints.
An undercover operation was conducted where an officer met several times with a male near St George’s Square, purchasing fentanyl.
Officers observed another male in the area involved in drug transactions. They arrested the second male while he was putting cocaine on a digital scale in an alleged attempt to sell. A search showed the male was in possession of more controlled substances as well.
A 26-year-old Guelph male was charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking, two counts of possessing controlled substances and failing to comply with a probation order. That person is set to appear in court Nov. 22.
They also arrested and charged a 37-year-old Guelph man with two counts of trafficking a controlled substance. He remains in custody and will appear in court Nov. 15.
On Monday Guelph Police added more resources to the downtown area to help address public safety concerns. Since the start of 2023, officers have been involved in more than 35 separate drug trafficking investigations related to the downtown. They arrested more than 80 people, laying over 460 charges with that.
