Rangers extend point streak to 10 games with win over Erie Otters

The Kitchener Rangers extend their winning streak to five games and their point streak to 10 games after defeating the Erie Otters on Friday night by a score of 6-2.

The Rangers dominated the first period by scoring three goals, including one only 49 seconds into the game by Trent Swick. Erie would make it close in the second after two back-to-back goals by Gabriel Frasca and Malcolm Spence. Kitchener would add three more to their tally, including from Andrew Vermeulen and Luke Ellinas.

Matthew Hlacar recorded two goals on the night as well as his first OHL career point. Jackson Parson would get his sixth win of the season.

570 colour commentator Paul Fixter said the Rangers felt “pretty good about themselves” after establishing the 3-0 lead after the first period.

“They didn’t buckle and they built upon that and ended up winning 6-2,” said Fixter. He added that Hlacar brings a physical presence on the ice and spoke highly of his two goal night.

“He’s got a set of hands that can do more than fisticuffs, he can put pucks in the net,” said Fixter. “That last goal, he had hands of a player that we haven’t seen, but look forward to seeing more in the future.

The Rangers are currently in first place in the Midwest Division, second in the Western Conference and third in the OHL overall standings, behind the Windsor Spitfires and the Niagara Ice Dogs.

The Rangers head down to Erie for game two against the Otters on Saturday. Puck drop is at 7 p.m.
