Guelph Humane Society treating foxes for mange

The Guelph Humane Society (GHS) has provided an update to an outbreak of parasitic sarcoptic mange that has been affecting the local fox population.

The GHS took to social media to detail its efforts in treating infected animals.

The Instagram post says its officers have seen success using humane netting practices to capture the foxes. They are then returned to the GHS where they are given comfort treatment, medication and hydration before being turned over to a licensed wildlife rehabilitation facility for recovery and eventual release.

Typically, parasitic sarcoptic mange presents with a rash, thick yellow crust, missing patches of fur and extreme itchiness.

The GHS is asking anyone who sees a fox with symptoms to contact them immediately. You are asked to try to keep an eye on the animal to help officers find them. Keep your distance and remove dogs or other spectators to help prevent the fox from taking off.
