How well does your child’s school compare to others in Ontario?

Schools in Ontario got a report card of their own on Thursday as the Fraser Institute released its assessment of elementary schools in Ontario based on statistics from 2023.

To make assessments, the Fraser Institute considers a number of factors, including the average reading, writing, and math levels of students in Grade 3 and Grade 6.

A school in Cambridge and a school in New Dundee were tied for first place amongst the more than 3,000 schools assessed in the study.

The International School of Cambridge, a private school operated by the Islamic Centre of Cambridge on Dunbar Road, earned a perfect score of 10, earning them the first place spot.

New Dundee Public School also scored a 10 tying them in first place.

In Waterloo, Abraham Erb Public School received a 9.3 on its report card, putting them in the top 2 per cent of all schools.

Laurelwood and Vista Hills public schools also received excellent ratings of 9.1.

On the other end of the spectrum, St. Peter Catholic Elementary in Cambridge finished in the bottom 50 of the list with a score of just 1.5.

The Fraser Institute stressed that the scores are meant to show comparisons, and that each school on the list is capable of improving. For example, a school in Thunder Bay rose from a 4.1 to a 9.6 in just six years.
