A four-way stop was approved this week at an intersection in Cambridge that’s caused some collisions in the past. It’s set to be installed at the corner of Laurel and Lawrence Street.
The Cambridge councillor who presented the idea originally to council about a year ago, Corey Kimpson, is hoping they can get it done before the new school year.
“When we look at the way that traffic flows in the area, and we looked at where pedestrians cross. Laurel and Lawrence is a popular crossing for students,” said Kimpson.
She is pleased to see that it is going to be installed to make the roads in Preston safer.
“It’s had a number of collisions in the past, that the city transportation looked into the situation and gathered some data and felt that this type of a stop with proper crosswalks for pedestrians is warranted.”
Kimpson told CityNews Kitchener they get numerous complaints from people living on Laurel Street or nearby about speeding.
“It’s really an area where having a stop sign and some pauses in the traffic flow should help to decrease the speed somewhat.”
Kimpson said she noticed while campaigning on Laurel Street that people had a hard time hearing her from their own doorsteps due to high levels of noise coming from traffic on the street.
“We really need to look overall how we can make changes going forward to design our roads to be safer.”
It will cost about $15,400 for traffic sign revisions and new pavement markings, that will be funded out of the 2024 transportation operating budget.
The four-way stop is also located near a new development set to go up at 777 Laurel St. and 308 Dolph St. that will contain about 1,215 units.
