Waterloo Region is getting a new state-of-the-art recycling facility

Waste Management (WM) Canada is planning to build two new recycling facilities in the province, one in Waterloo Region and the other will be built in the Greater Napanee area.

It’s part of WM’s investment into new or upgraded recycling facilities in North America of more than US $1 billion from 2022 to 2026.

“As North America’s largest recycler, expanding our footprint in Ontario is a significant opportunity that directly aligns with WM’s sustainability strategy.” said Tracy Black, President, WM Canada in a media release.

 They anticipate the state-of-the-art facilities will be complete by the end of 2025.

In a statement to CityNews, a representative for WM said the facilities are meant to increase overall recycling capacity in the area, expand the list of materials that WM manages to include more types of plastic while utilizing more modern sorting technologies.

“These are highly automated facilities, relying on mechanical and optical sorting technology that is capable of processing up to 40 metric tons per hour (MTPH).”

In the media release, WM said the new “highly automated facilities will support processing approximately 30 per cent of Ontario’s total blue box volume.”
