Traffic is once again moving through Woodstock on the westbound lanes of Highway 401 – following a morning closure due to a fatal collision.
The MTO put that closure into effect just after 3 a.m. on Tuesday, after what they called a vehicle fire.
Images from the scene shared by OPP West Region show a tractor trailer that appears to have left the roadway just before Sweaburg Road, tearing off a portion of the guardrail with it.
A release from OPP indicated that collision occurred around 2:20 p.m.
Emergency crews arrived on scene to find the involved transport truck engulfed in flames – a 59-year-old man from Windsor that was behind the wheel was pronounced dead at the scene.
Members of the OPP Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement (TIME) team are investigating alongside the Urban Search and Rescue Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosive Disposal Unit (UCRT).
OPP Forensic Identification Services are also involved in that investigation.
That collision resulted in a lengthy morning closure through the area on Tuesday, with westbound lanes of traffic closed from Norwich Avenue / Highway 59 through to Mill Street / Sweaburg Road – leaving motorists to rejoin the highway by Folden’s Line.
Two-lanes were opened to traffic late on Tuesday morning – though the highway has since fully reopened.
Anyone with information regarding the collision is asked to contact Oxford OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
Anonymous tips can also be provided through Oxford Crime Stoppers.
