Training camp begins for the Kitchener Rangers

The Kitchener Rangers have ended their summer hiatus and are back on the ice for training camp.
The first group of players skate at 5:30 p.m., with the next group going out at 6:30.
With the regular season starting in a month (Sept. 29 vs. Saginaw), the team will make key roster decisions in the coming days.

According to Rangers broadcaster Mike Farwell, this training camp is different than years past.
“I think [camp] takes on added importance because there are so many jobs available with the team,” said Farwell. “There’s going to be stiff competition for spots that are available. These young players are going to get a chance to not just show their stuff during training camp but maybe earn a spot on the roster and get some significant playing time in their first year in the league.”
Not only are there fewer returning players, but the team also has a brand new head coach in Jussi Ahokas, who will be making some first impressions.
The players get their first scrimmage action Wednesday for the blue and white games. Those games will be open to the public.
Farwell told CityNews that it’s cool to see the amount of fan support the Rangers before the season even begins.

“There’s just such an interest in this team. It’s such a tradition,” said Farwell. “Hopefully, under this new coach and this young, exciting team, the fans will have a lot to cheer about during the season.”
The busy week of training camp ends with Fan Fest and the Rangers first exhibition game on Sunday.
