Statistics Canada has released new data on police-reported crimes from 2022.
The numbers show mixed results for Waterloo Region, with a two per cent decrease in crime rate from 2021, but a three per cent higher score on the Crime Severity Index.
The crime rate is based upon Criminal Code incidents, and they are calculated per 100,000 people. Waterloo Region’s crime rate was 5,462 and the local Crime Severity Index score was 79.1.
Those are very similar numbers to what the whole country saw (crime rate of 5664). However, Canada’s crimes went up across the board, especially in youth crime rate, where Statistics Canada observed an 18 per cent rise. Canada’s Crime Severity Index score of 78.1 is also the highest its been since 2007, one year after the index was created.
As for Guelph, they saw their crime rate rise by seven per cent, while the Crime Severity Index score went up by eight per cent.
Guelph Police remind the public that the city still ranks 12th-lowest in crime severity of the 35 Census Metropolitan Areas (CMA’s) in Canada.
