Protecting your skin from the aging effects of blue light

We all know the importance of protecting our skin from the sun but did you know that blue light emitted from screens can also cause skin damage?
Phones, laptops, televisions and even fluorescent light bulbs are all sources of blue light. The good news is that dermatologists say blue light does not cause skin cancer—the bad news is it does cause the skin to age prematurely.
Blue light or High Energy Visible Light (HEV) causes damage that results in fine lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation and melasma. Screens are often quite close to our bodies for long periods of time which means that their potential for skin damage is high.
Fortunately, there are ways to protect skin from blue light and there is a good chance that you are already using some protective ingredients in your skincare routine.
Antioxidants can help reduce damage caused by the oxidative stress of blue light. Antioxidants boost the body’s immune system by protecting cells from harmful free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules that can cause damage to our cells—air pollution, UV radiation, pesticides and smoking are all sources of free radical damage. Increasing antioxidants in the skin reduces inflammation and many corresponding unwanted skin issues.
Vitamin E, Glycyrrhetinic Acid and Vitamin C are powerful antioxidants known to protect from blue light and keep free radicals from wreaking havoc on your skin.
Mineral sunscreens are another great way to keep skin from absorbing blue light. Mineral sunscreens sit on top of the skin and physically block UV and HEV rays by reflecting them. Chemical SPF products are not effective in protecting skin from blue light.
Fortunately, many Diego Dalla Palma sunscreens are formulated with a combination of chemical and mineral ingredients in easy to wear formulas that make it easy to protect your skin outdoors and indoors.
The strongest defence against blue light is a mixture of both antioxidants and sunscreen. Mineral sunscreen can block some of the blue light but not all so it is important to use antioxidant-rich products for a complete protective approach.
