Almost 200 new COVID cases confirmed in region Thursday

Region of Waterloo Public Health confirmed 196 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday.

It puts the overall total at 43,040. The resolved case rate is 97 per cent.

Hospitalizations have declined by four to 38 — seven patients are in intensive care.

No new deaths were reported. The local death toll is 402.

The active caseload is up to 1,007.

In terms of variants of concern, the region's dashboard shows 356 of those cases (92 per cent) have been linked to the Omicron variant since February 27.

85.9 per cent of residents five and over in Waterloo Region are now fully vaccinated. Over 1.30 million doses have been administered to local residents, including over 293,000 third doses. 50.8 per cent of those 12 and over have received a third dose.

54.8 per cent of children between 5 and 11 have received at least one dose. 39.7 are fully vaccinated.

Meanwhile, the province reported 4,224 new cases Thursday.
