List of the top public sector wage earners in Waterloo Region

The provincial government released its 2021 'sunshine list' on Friday afternoon.

The annual Public Sector Salary Disclosure Act lists workers in the public sector that earned $100,000 or more in the past year.

As was the case in 2020, the president and CEO of Grand River Hospital was the top wage earner locally. Ron Gagnon made over $457,000, with taxable benefits of $1,733.04.

Below are some of the other top public sector wage earners in our region:

– Vivek Goel, president of the University of Waterloo, earned over $416,000. $236,723.28 at UW with taxable benefits of $969.68. He also earned $179,763.03 at the University of Toronto prior to joining UW. His taxable benefits there were $7,733.16.

– John Tibbits, president of Conestoga College – $409,900 — taxable benefits $1,092.61.

– Bryan Larkin, chief of Waterloo Regional Police – $375,080.23 — taxable benefits $13,909.74.

– Deborah MacLatchy, president Wilfrid Laurier University – $363,000.05 —  taxable benefits $816.36.

– Patrick Gaskin, CEO Cambridge Memorial Hospital – $329,348.49 — taxable benefits $5,344.48.

–  Bruce Lauckner, CAO Region of Waterloo – $315,412.44 — taxable benefits $18,870.10.

– Lee Fairclough, president of St. Mary's General Hospital – $307,258.30 — taxable benefits $2,334.12.

– Dr. Hsiu-Li Wang, commissioner of Public Health and Emergency Services/Medical Officer of Health for Region of Waterloo – $287,237.58 — taxable benefits $2,845.78.

– Dan Chapman, CAO with City of Kitchener – 268,289.09 — taxable benefits $10,201.44.

– Loretta Notten, director of the Waterloo Region Catholic District School Board – $236,922.96. No taxable benefits.

– Lila Read, associate director with the Waterloo Region District School Board – $228,300.17 — taxable benefits – $173.13. Current WRDSB Director of Education Jeewan Chanicka did not appear on the list. chanicka did not officially join the board until August.

The CEO of Ontario Power Generation topped the list again. Kenneth Hartwick made $1.62 million, around 30 per cent more than he did in 2020.

In fact, the top four earners on the list all work for OPG.
