Regional police still providing assistance in Ottawa

A spokesperson for Waterloo Regional Police confirm the service still has members in Ottawa.

17 officers remain in the nation's capital in a support role.

Meantime, Ottawa police say they have a plan to prevent a sequel to the truck convoy occupation, and that includes monitoring the rural encampments of convoy members and supporters on the city’s outskirts.

Officers will continue patrolling the downtown core, along with officers further out of the core serving as lookouts.

“There will be continued expansion of police presence, vehicle and foot patrols and overall level of vigilance,” said Ottawa Police Deputy Chief Trish Ferguson. “Individuals who have attempted to come to Ottawa for related demonstration purposes have been identified and spoken to and told to leave, with documented warning for charges should they return.”

There is also active intelligence in place when it comes to the rural encampments.

“We absolutely have a response plan in place to manage the numbers that could or would come to be engaged in this to make sure that what happened three weeks ago — or four weeks ago now, doesn't occur again,” acting police chief Steve Bell said.

As for those extra officers from out of town, Bell says we still have them, and will continue to have them until the situation is completely over.
