One dead after apartment fire in Kitchener (update)
The Office of the Fire Marshall has been called in to assist in an investigation following an apartment fire in Kitchener.
That incident occurred on Sunday afternoon around 2:48 p.m., as regional police said they were notified of a fire in an apartment unit at 140 Weber St. E.
“The initial crew were able to knock the fire down very quickly. It was contained to the kitchen area of the one-bedroom apartment, so it was limited damage, which is limited fire spread and smoke spread. It did get some smoke spread into the hallway, but again, it's very limited. Fire crews were here very quickly,” said Michael Bird, a fire investigator with the Office of the Fire Marshall,

Bob Gilmore, Kitchener fire chief said it was a full response from fire crews, with 24 firefighters.
“They had information that an occupant was still inside. They conducted a search and rescue inside the apartment and located a person, removed a person from the apartment, who was subsequently declared deceased,” said Bird.
The 56-year-old has been brought to Toronto for a postmortem to determine an exact cause of death.
The fire is not believed to be suspicious at this time.
