More than 300 blood donation appointments available in Waterloo Region
Canadian Blood Services typically sees a drop in donations over the holidays, and this year is no exception.
“That's just a natural occurrence as people get really, really busy. They're doing their Christmas shopping, visiting family … so we do typically see a dip in donations,” said Gina Leyva, territory manager for Waterloo Region. “So the supply decreases, and as well, the demand increases because more people are out and about, there's more people on the roads, more car accidents, and other reasons why people would need blood.”
In Waterloo Region alone, there are over 300 appointments available heading into the new year.

“I know it's not top of mind for everybody this year, there's a lot of things happening … but we're really urging anyone who is eligible to donate to please think about giving.”
Leyva said she can personally attest how important blood donations are.
“It was nine years ago that I was in labour, I gave birth to our son four-and-a-half months early at just 24-and-a-half weeks. He was born on New Year's Day, and we spent four months at McMaster hospital just taking care of him. So this season is always a good reminder for me and my friends and family … everyone close to me, we always donate blood around this time.”
Leyva said donating blood won't take much of your time either.
“People would be so incredibly surprised at how quick and streamlined the process is. You're in and out in less than an hour.”

She also noted that COVID-19 protocols are in place to create a safe environment for everyone.
“It's very much safe to donate blood and the need for blood does not take a holiday, so patients will need blood and we need volunteers to make sure there's enough blood for those patients.”
The Canadian Blood Services clinic on Bridgeport Road in Waterloo is generally open six days a week. It will be open throughout the holidays, except for Christmas Day.
Leyva said anyone who books and attends an appointment locally for New Year's Day will automatically be entered into a contest to win a pair of Apple AirPods.
