Anti-racism group presents recommendations to regional council

It's another step forward in addressing systemic racism in regional policies and practices.

Regional council heard from the co-chairs of the Anti-Racism Advisory Working Group — put together last year — about some recommendations on things that can be done to help in the effort.

The recommendations fall under five categories, addressing items like hiring practices, funding for Indigenous initiatives and finding space for Indigenous groups, non-police responses to mental health calls and splitting the job of the Director of Reconciliation, Equity Diversity and Inclusion into two roles.

The group said reconciliation is separate, and splitting the roles is not only necessary, but vital to maintain the integrity of the positions.

Regional staff have been asked to consult with the group, and come back with a report at a later date that looks at how recommendations can be implemented.
