Canadian Blood Services seeking donors, regardless of vaccination status

Canadian Blood Services is hoping to clear up any confusion around donating blood and COVID-19 vaccinations.

A spokesperson said they will accept donors regardless of their vaccination status.

“At this time, a donor vaccination status will not be required to enter a clinic,” said Gina Leyva, Territory Manager at Canadian Blood Services for Waterloo Region.

She added whether or not someone has been vaccinated does not affect their eligibility to donate blood, or the safety of the blood they are donating.

While some vaccines require a waiting period before donating blood, Leyva said there is no deferral period for the COVID-19 vaccine.

Those who have already received a COVID-19 vaccine can donate on the same day.

Leyva said they will continue to assess guidelines to ensure safety at blood donation clinics.

She added with the long weekend fast approaching, blood donors are certainly needed. The Canadian Blood Services clinic in Waterloo has over 60 appointments available between Saturday and Monday.
