Eastwood Collegiate changing nickname to Lions

Welcome the Eastwood Collegiate Lions!

The Waterloo Region District School Board has confirmed the school has changed its nickname to Lions, following much discussion and input from both staff and students.

“In January, the school shared a video with all students through their Google Classrooms that reiterated the reason for the name change,” they said.

“The school also went through a lengthy process last year that involved multiple announcements and invites to students to be involved in the name change process.”

“Ultimately, all students had a chance to vote on the new name in June.”

In early November, the school issued a letter to the community, stating they would no longer use their old moniker, the Rebels.

They said after a discussion that dated back to the spring of 2020, it was determined the nickname and its historic links to a Confederate soldier are both “indisputable and problematic.”
