Local blood donation clinic will be open New Year’s Day for first time ever
Canadian Blood Services say the need for blood doesn't stop over the holidays, and has actually grown as the pandemic has locked everyone indoors, pushing many interactions to the virtual world.
For the first time ever, the Kitchener-Waterloo Canadian Blood Services clinic will be open on New Year's Day, and officials say they plan to stay open everyday except christmas day all in an effort to make donating blood accessible for the public.
“This is because platelets do have a very short shelf life, so if we aren't open we would risk not having enough for patient need,” said GIna Leyva, a spokesperson for the organization.

She noted that it's understandable some people may be apprehensive due to the pandemic, but she reassures that the public can still donate blood.
“The blood donation clinic is 100 per cent safe,” said Leyva. “We are overseen by Health Canada, so we are following many, many practices in the clinic including wearing a mask, which is provided to you when you arrive.”
In addition to masks being provided, a free taxi ride is available until December 26 to those giving blood as well, courtesy of Waterloo Taxi.
This is, after all, the time of year for giving.
“If you're thinking about the one or two things you could do to make a difference, donating blood is a direct connection to saving someone's life,” said Leyva. “What better gift could you give?”
