Waterloo council approves nuisance bylaw for homecoming weekend

A nuisance noise provision has been approved to help the city of Waterloo crack down on potential pandemic homecoming parties.

Waterloo council unanimously approved a motion to extend a nuisance noise bylaw to Sept. 25-27, what would have been this year's homecoming weekend for both Wilfrid Laurier University and the University of Waterloo.

“In light of COVID-19, nobody wants to be sick for 14-days during the school year at the university level, so I think they (students) will keep that in mind,” said Waterloo Mayor Dave Jaworsky. “But it's good to know we have this in our back pocket as well.”

The city ammended the nuisance bylaw in September 2019 to address noise generated specifically by St. Patrick's Day parties on Ezra Ave.

It can be applied at other times with council approval.

Bylaw staff have said despite homecoming going virtual this year for Wilfrid Laurier University and the University of Waterloo, they still expect to see an influx of students in the surrounding neighbourhoods.
