Approximately 60% of Waterloo Region residents still working during COVID-19
The Workforce Planning Board of Waterloo Wellington Dufferin released a survey, gathering information on workforces in the region.
Through this survey, they determined a rough estimate of how many people are still working and what businesses are still up and running.
“Approximately 64 per cent are still seeing some sort of work at this time, the other side of it, which did not surprise me is that there is still a significant number of people who are unemployed,” said Charlene Hofbauer, Executive Director, Workforce Planning Board of Waterloo Wellington Dufferin.

She said there is a lot of change occurring daily, and they are hoping to continue gathering data on the workforce to better determine our outcome after the pandemic.
“We would really like to try it again in about a month's time to see how we shifted again. We're looking at how we can do that, what sort of questions we would ask, would we ask the same questions, would we change the questions, we would like to see if there is some change.”
Hofbauer said the unemployment rate is rising, but some jobs are opening in essential services.
“I know the hospital has been putting out a number of posting for anyone who has a healthcare background, we are seeing warehouses and transportation companies who still do need people, there is still some demand there, it shifts day to day and week to week.”
She said they are hoping the data they are collecting will help out longterm.
