IKEA closing pick-up store in Kitchener

IKEA Canada has announced it will be closing its pick-up store in Kitchener in a few weeks.

It was one of five locations that were part of a global test program for the company, to learn how their customers want to shop in new retail formats.

“Throughout the test, we gathered many valuable insights which will inform how we continue to evolve and adapt as a business.” said a release.

The Kitchener store (on Gateway Park Drive), along with ones in London, St. Catharines, Whitby and Windsor, will all close on January 29.

But the last day customers can place an order for delivery to one of the pick-up stores is Jan. 15.

“We appreciate the support we've received from these communities over the past several years and we remain committed to serving them in the best possible way. With urbanization, technology and digitalization, we know our consumers' lives are rapidly changing, including the ways they like to shop. To best meet our customers' needs in these markets, we will explore new solutions with a focus on enhancing our digital tools and improving our local service offer.” the release went on to say.

Close to 30 people work at the Kitchener store and IKEA is hoping to find them other positions within the company.

The pick-up stores opened in 2015.
