11 local athletes win medals at the Canada Winter Games
It was a Canada Winter Games to remember for several local athletes.
Waterloo's speedskater Claudia Heeney won a gold medal in the short track – 3000 m points race and silver in the short track – 500 m race.
Heeney also set a new games record for fastest female in the 1,000-metre race, with a time of 1:33.481 in the semi-finals.

Here are the other medal winners from Waterloo Region:
- Dylan Deverill of Cambridge captured gold in the team competition of men's squash
- Lily Wilberforce of Waterloo and Kitchener's Aidan Wright won gold in figure skating pairs pre-novice mix
- Kitchener's Sam Orend won a pair of silver medals – in table tennis team and table tennis doubles mix
- Waterloo's Sydney Embro and Kitchener's Eric Millar won silver is the figure skating dance novice mix
- The Ontario female ringette team won silver. That team included Waterloo's Janna Griffioen, Kitchener's Tatum Allen and Maddie MacLean of St. Jacobs
- Kitchener's Owen Brawley and Mackenzie Ripley (St. Thomas) captured bronze in figure skating pairs novice mix
The Canada Winter Games wrapped up in Red Deer, Alberta on Sunday.
Team Ontario returned with a total of 18 gold, 43 silver and 44 bronze medals.
