Community members concerned after offensive sign hung during local homecoming celebrations

Community members from all over the region are expressing their concern online after a photo of a homemade sign in Waterloo was shared.

A bed sheet was seen hanging from what appears to be a student home in the Regina Street area with spray paint that read “she called you daddy 4 18 years. Now it's our turn.”

The sign appeared during homecoming celebrations at Wilfrid Laurier University.

Many people online were calling on the university and Waterloo Regional Police to ask students to take it down.

On Twitter, Laurier responded saying their Special Constables were looking into the sign Saturday afternoon.

Regional Police also taking to Twitter to say they were “made aware of this offensive sign and responded to the area to speak directly to the residents and ensure the sign was taken down.”

Sunday afternoon, a day after the controversial sign was hung and taken down, Wilfrid Laurier University tweeted their Special Constables spoke to Laurier students and non-Laurier residents living in the house.

The university says the Laurier students will be reviewed in connection to this incident under the Non-Academic Student Code of Conduct.
