Intercounty Baseball League introducing a new trophy

By Mark Pare

The name will stay the same, but the Kitchener Panthers and Barrie Baycats will have some new hardware to fight over during the IBL Final.

Officials with the Intercounty Baseball League are introducing a brand new “Jack and Lynne Dominico” IBL Championship trophy, said to have a more modernized look than the current — and soon to be put out of service — wooden prize that's been presented for close to 20 years.

“We have done a number of things to recognize our 100th season,” said Commissioner John Kastner in a release. “We recognized the top 100 players in league history, we had special baseballs from Rawlings complete with out 100th season logo, we produced a fantastic book.”

“All of those things were great initiatives but the trophy is the one thing that will create a lasting legacy for this, our 100th season.”

The new trophy (shown above) is a traditional-looking cup made of nickel, mounted on a black base that has levels to it.

Enscribed on the base are all 99 league champions of the past and the IBL logo featured prominently.

This trophy was created by Wilson Trophy out of Mississauga.

We'll soon find out who will be the first to lift the new trophy.

Game 1 of the best-of-seven IBL Final goes tomorrow night in Barrie.

Game 2 goes from Jack Couch Park in Kitchener Thursday night at 7:30 p.m.
