Adam McCabe sentenced to two years minus one day for killing his father in 2016

Adam McCabe has been sentenced to two years, less a day, on a manslaughter charge for killing his father in a crime the judge referred to as “motivated by compassion.”

The now 34-year old — sitting in the prisoner’s box, wearing black pants and a dark, long sleeved shirt underneath a white t-shirt — was sentenced this afternoon, after pleading guilty last week to manslaughter for the death of Morgan McCabe in March of 2016.

He will be serving out his two year sentence at St. Lawrence Treatment Centre in Brockville.

This will be followed by three years probation, and a ban on weapons and alcohol.

McCabe will serve the years of probation living with his family.

The court heard McCabe had a history of dealing with law enforcement, including close to 100 liquor offenses that dates back several years.

He also had run ins for assaults, impaired driving and breaching probation.

The court heard that McCabe could not bear to see his father in deteriorating health, and killed him by stuffing a towel down his throat at the AR Goudie long-term care home.

Morgan had sustained a head injury in 2010, and was bed-ridden ever since. The court learned the elder McCabe could only communicate with his left hand, by showing either a thumbs up or thumbs down.

The Crown did want a 10 year sentence, but the judge countered by saying imposing a long-term sentence would have forced McCabe into a federal prison.

In doing so, the judge says McCabe wouldn’t have been able to access the help he needs for his alcohol addiction.

The Crown was in attendance, but didn’t provide comment.
