Community remembers Harold Schlueter, founder of Schlueter Automotive Group

A major player in the K-W business scene is being remembered today.

Harold Schlueter died unexpectedly of natural causes on March 1st in Florida.

The 90-year-old has a long list of accomplishments in both the automotive and land business.

He started in the used car business 70 years ago and founded the Schlueter Automotive Group (Schlueter Chevrolet, Schlueter Hyundai, and Schlueter Acura).

One of his granddaughters, Amy Schlueter spoke with 570 News and says her grandfather may have been “politely stubborn” but also extremely kind and always took an interest in the lives of those around him.

“Even when he was the guy in charge, he was still the guy changing light bulbs at the dealership…he had a sweetness that I guess not everyone had the chance to see.”

She says many people have reached out to the family to share their fond memories of the influential businessman.

“It’s a very sad time and it was unexpected and we weren’t prepared in any sense. It helps to smile a bit and remember him fondly especially when everyone in our family and within the community at large is doing it with us.”

When looking back at her grandpa’s career, Amy says that the word ‘retirement’ was not in his vocabulary.

“He was grandpa to me but as I grew older I came to truly understand and appreciate what he had accomplished in his career and in the city and he was a true inspiration to me – as a grandpa and within his career.”

She adds her grandparents always spent time in Florida and the family has many fond memories of playing cards, learning to golf and driving around the golf cart when visiting.

The funeral will be held at St. Agnes R.C. Church (75 Bluevale St. N. Waterloo) at 10:45 Thursday morning.

The family is asking for donations to be made out to the Kidney Foundation – Camp Dorset. All money will help kids on dialysis to go to camp. Donations to other charities will also be accepted.
