Local council provides grants to help with resettlement of Syrian refugees

The Immigration Partnership Council will now receive applications and provide grants to local community agencies and private sponsors directly involved in the resettlement of Syrian refugees.

John Haddock with the Immigration Partnership Council tells 570 news about the grants.

“There was an expression of out-pour from the community wishing to donate to the cause of the Syrian refugees and through the assistance of the Community Foundation, the Immigration Partnership Council took on the role of receiving grants and providing support to the Syrian refugees and to the community organizations that are helping with their resettlement.”

Haddock says their grant application is open until March 9th, but it’s their intention to have a monthly process– so if you miss this one, there will be another.

He adds they will review the applications and hopefully respond within the next month to the applicant with resources.

Since early 2016, Waterloo Region residents have donated more than $100,000 to a special fund for Syrian newcomers. The Kitchener and Waterloo Community Foundation collected these funds and matched them for a total of more than $200,000. The Cambridge & North Dumfries Community Foundation has also begun collecting donations.

“I’m so amazed and pleased by the response from our community for the resettlement of Syrian refugees. We believe that the support and the grants that we are able to provide through the Immigration Partnership Council will actually fill the gap in, in terms of unexpected or extraordinary needs that our refugees didn’t expect.”

He added that he believes it’s important to our overall community that everyone is able to work, settle and belong as soon as possible.
