Block Three brewing a beer with proceeds going to Cystic Fibrosis

It all started with the voice of the Kitchener Rangers on 570 News, Mike Farwell. On our sister station, Country 106.7, he mentioned he was going to miss the small batches from Block Three Brewing in St. Jacobs the most while going 115 days without drinking beer. He even – unfortunately for him, fortunately for someone (me) – gave away the bottles in his fridge.

He tweeted that he’d like a special beer to be waiting for him, when the 115 days were done. The guys at the brewery got in touch with him, and agreed to the idea.

So, this afternoon at 12:30, they’re tapping the aptly named, “Face For Radio IPA.”

“It has some very nice fruity and piney notes,” says Block Three co-founder Graham Spence. “It’s been dried hoped with Citra, Amarillo and Mosaic hops, which gives it that fruity and piney notes.” The best part of the new beer, is proceeds go to a cause near and dear to Farwell’s heart – Cystic Fibrosis Canada, after two of his sisters died from the disease.

“We get a lot of support from the local community so it’s nice to give back,” says Spence. “For instance, for our ‘Blocktoberfest‘, we donated the proceeds to the Grand River Hospital Foundation’s Waterloo-Wellington Breast Centre.”

Farwell said in a Facebook post: “Luanne was only 24, Sheri just 18 […] Thanks to your response to my cockamamy ideas, people with CF are living to be 40, and even beyond. You’re doing such incredible work. This is why.”

Farwell adds in another post on Facebook: “Sometimes, you say something ridiculous on the radio. Something like, “I’m going to give up beer for 115 days!” And then people take you seriously and a hashtag is born . But then other times you say things like, “it’s the Block Three beer that I’m going to miss the most. I love that stuff!” And strangely enough, people sometimes listen. So those fine folks at Block Three said they’d like to help mark the end of the #BeerFreeFor115 challenge by brewing a special beer just for the occasion. Not only that, they’re going to donate a portion of the proceeds to Cystic Fibrosis Canada- Kitchener-Waterloo & District Chapter. Because Block Three is awesome that way. I hope you’ll join us Friday at Block Three for the release party.”

Anyone interested in having a pint of Face For Radio IPA, or just looking to support Farwell or Block Three is encouraged to wear their favourite Christmas sweater, and head down to the brewery today between 12:30 and 9 p.m.
