Regional Police remember fallen Constable Dave Nicholson

Regional Police remember a fallen Constable today.

Seventeen years ago, Constable Dave Nicholson lost his life when he went to rescue a young boy from the Parkhill Dam. Tragically, the two drowned.

Bryan Larkin, Chief of the Waterloo Regional Police Service, says it’s important to continue to remember Dave’s legacy:

“It’s a tragic circumstance. Today, our thoughts are with the Nicholson family … Although we’re not perfect, we’re not infallible, at the heart of it, we have people who simply care about the community. And at times, they put themselves above others and in harm’s way without any fear. And I think that’s a very noble cause.”

Larkin says it’s an opportunity to remember the best of what police officers can do.

“I know, as the Chief, I’m very appreciative of the work that happens every single day in our organization. We have tremendous people doing wonderful things and making a difference. And that being said, we also live in an incredible community, and I think it’s also important to recognize the tremendous support that we have from our citizens.”

He adds it’s also a chance to remember the Gage family, who lost their son that day.

Nicholson is the only officer in the history of the Waterloo Regional Police Service to die in the line of duty.

For his actions, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Bravery and the Ontario Medal for Police Bravery.

He is survived by his wife and three sons.
