Kids Alive International doing its part in Haiti

Kids Alive International is hoping to help the children left orphaned and homeless by the earthquake in Haiti.

The agency’s Canadian office is in Cambridge. It provides homes for orphaned children in 17 different countries, including Haiti, by placing them with families rather than in orphanages.

The agency’s Executive Director in Canada, Ken Christy, tells 570 News they are now taking on extra children in Haiti, and putting them up in tents. He says initially, they’re bringing in a group of 50 kids but they hope to bring in more once the first group is settled.

Christy says the agency was lucky, because their facilities and people were in Northern Haiti, far enough from the epicentre that they were left unscathed. He says the initial concern was the availability of basic supplies, but they’ve been helped by their operation in the neighbouring Dominican Republic.

Christy says the agency is not looking for volunteers right now, but they will take monetary donations. He says so far they’ve raised about $9,000 in Canada and all the money goes directly to the work they’re doing in Haiti. Donations can be made online at www.kidsalive.ca or they can be dropped off at the office at 55 Fleming Drive, Unit 2, Cambridge.
