Area municipalities to end state of emergency next Friday, remaining at regional level

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

Due to COVID-19 numbers improving and provincial guidance, cities and townships in Waterloo Region will end their emergency declarations next week.

Most will terminate their declarations on March 25. North Dumfries Township already ended its state of emergency on March 14.

But the state of emergency will remain in place at the regional level, the region stating it has not met the criteria for terminating it. It adds services it provides continue to be supported by the declaration, including vaccine clinics and potential redeployment of staff to support healthcare, long-term care, as well as the shelter system.

An update will be provided when the criteria has been made to terminate it.

The region is also reminding residents to follow all current public health measures to help protect against the spread of COVID-19.

There have been over 41,000 local cases and 401 COVID-related deaths since March, 2020. 85 per cent of residents five and over have been fully vaccinated.
